Healing from the Inside: How What You Eat Affects Hair and Skin

Healing from the Inside: How What You Eat Affects Hair and Skin

There’s an old Caribbean saying my grandmother used to whisper while peeling mangoes: “What you put in, shows out.”

It wasn’t just about food—it was wisdom.

Because radiant skin and strong hair don’t start at the bottle. They start at the bowl. The cup. The plate. The kitchen.

We love our oils and creams (and yes, they matter), but if you’re not nourishing from within, you’re just polishing the surface.

So here’s what I’ve learned—and lived—about eating for beauty:

  1. Hydration is your first beauty secret. Water flushes out toxins and supports elasticity. Add cucumber slices, mint, or citrus for flavor and even more benefits.
  2. Healthy fats feed your glow. Think avocados, walnuts, flaxseed, and coconut oil. These nourish the scalp and hydrate skin from within.
  3. Leafy greens are your best friend. Spinach, kale, and callaloo are loaded with iron and vitamins that promote hair growth and reduce dullness.
  4. Protein strengthens the foundation. Whether it’s lentils, fish, or quinoa—your hair is made of keratin, and keratin is built from protein.
  5. Color means nutrients. Fruits like papaya, berries, and mangoes are rich in antioxidants that fight off skin damage and promote collagen production.

Now I’m not saying you have to eat perfect. (I love a warm cocoa bread as much as anyone.)

But try adding more of what loves you back. Feed your body like you’d feed someone you love.

Because healing is holistic. And when you care for yourself on the inside, it shows.

Softly yours,
Sarai Alani 💛
