Detangling with Care: How to Stop Seeing Your Hair as the Enemy

I’ve seen it too many times: the sigh, the frustration, the “ugh, not today.”

Detangling, for many of us, has felt like war. A battle between what’s growing naturally from our heads and the tools in our hands. But what if I told you… it’s not supposed to be that way?

Your hair is not your enemy. It’s not unruly, wild, or too much. It’s just misunderstood—and maybe a little tired of being rushed through.

Here’s how I learned to detangle with grace, and how you can too:

  1. Start with moisture. Always. Dry detangling leads to breakage. Use a water-based spray, a creamy leave-in, or even aloe vera juice.
  2. Use your fingers first. They’re the gentlest detangling tool you own. Feel your way through knots instead of forcing them apart.
  3. Work in sections. Small ones. Clip the rest away. This keeps you from getting overwhelmed and keeps your hair safer.
  4. Breathe. Seriously. If your shoulders are creeping up or your jaw is clenching, pause. Stretch. Start again. With love.

This is your crown, not a curse. You don’t have to “tame” it. You don’t have to “fix” it. You just have to listen to it—and love it louder than the voices that told you it was too much.

Turn detangling into devotion. You might be surprised how your hair responds.

Softly yours,
Sarai Alani 💛
